Middle Eastern Music & Dance Heritage

Dance Workshop II

15 2nd St N
Friday Harbor, WA 98250

It's 2017! This is the time of year to renew yourself and accomplish goals, a year to start fresh and refocus! Coming from a culture wildly rich with music, dance and poetry, Middle Eastern dance has been an integral practice in my life since I was 9 years old --- regardless of what shape I was in at the time or age. Benefits such as establishing that sometimes elusive mind-body connection and control, heart healthy stamina, flexibility and so importantly, an overall feeling of a body positive state of mind --- all while being a part of a supportive, community oriented environment!

I've created a new class series based on the traditions I was raised in. Immerse yourself in a fun and exciting new class featuring folkloric music and dances of the Near and Middle East! Let go of the troubles of your day and restore your energy through music and dance. Become a part of an ancient and rich heritage! This 16 class course is dedicated to:

1. Community: A group class dedicated to creating a supportive, positive, safe community/tribe. Each class is an experience where you melt away the day's troubles through music, song and dance.

2. Culture: Experience the music and exotic rhythms while learning folk songs from Turkey and the Arab world as well as their dances in the old way. At the end of the 16 week course there will be an end of season hafla (party) to celebrate and have fun with everything learned!

3. Mind/Body: This class relies heavily on the cultural aspects of music and dance without compromising the structure and techniques for how to move your body safely to prevent injury. Therefore, as always, I teach the mechanics of the dance inspired from the Salimpour formats. These formats are appropriate for every single person of every age and skill level from my 90 year -old grandmother to my youngest student, from professional dancer to the novice. I have found this format to be the safest, most beneficial to the body as well as effective in learning the breakdown of the dance. You go at your own pace. For more information on the Salimpour formats please visit

Who it is for: Open to ages from 15 and up, all skill levels and genders.

Note: This is a closed group class. Once open enrollment is over, new students will need to wait until the next enrollment season. This is the most important aspect of this course in order to create a sense of community or 'tribe' vital to the cultural experience.

16 classes begins January 19th and ends May 18th.
