Island youth will be building two Coast Salish cedar strip canoes and paddles in one week from April 22-28. Dean Washington, a Salish elder and master canoe builder, will be leading 14 local youth on building the canoes and learning about canoe history in the San Juan Islands. We need your support to help make this happen. You can contact one of the partner organizations to donate or go to the GoFundMe campaign - search Kids and Canoes. Project partners are Island Rec, Spring Street International School, Friday Harbor School District, Friends of the San Juans, and Kaigani Canoe Voyaging Society. The canoes will be built in the HS STEM bldg.
Friday, April 21, 6:30-8:00 there will be a public talk by Salish Elder Dean Washington about Lummi Canoe use in the San Juan Islands. Talk at the HS STEM bldg. Saturday through Friday, April 22-28, 14 students will be building canoes and paddles at the HS STEM bldg. Friday, April 28, 3:30-5:30 public presentation of the canoes at the HS STEM bldg.
