San Juan Island Library, free. Confused about which film won Best Picture for 2016?  You are not alone.  Come see how the Oscar choice for Best Picture reflects the American society of each of three decades: You Can't Take It with You (Frank Capra, 1938); The Best Years of Our Lives (William Wyler, 1946); and On the Waterfront (Elia Kazan, 1954).  Therese tells all.  Refreshments are courtesy of the Friends of the Library.

Friday June 23: You Can't Take It with You (Frank Capra, 1938) - A man from a family of rich snobs becomes engaged to a woman from a good-natured but decidedly eccentric family.

Saturday June 24: The Best Years of Our Lives (William Wyler, 1946) - Three World War II veterans return home to small-town America to discover that they and their families have been irreparably changed.

Sunday June 25: On the Waterfront (Elia Kazan, 1954) - An ex-prize fighter turned longshoreman struggles to stand up to his corrupt union bosses.

Refreshments are courtesy of the Friends of the Library.
